Showcasing Approaches to Digital Humanities for Researchers: Introduction to the Australian Text Analytics Platform and Knowledge Mining

August 10, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm AEST

Simon Musgrave (UQ) provides an overview on the Australian Text Analytics Platform (ATAP), an open source environment that provides researchers with tools and training for analysing, processing, and exploring text.

ATAP will support researchers transitioning to code-based text analysis, with the resultant benefits of flexibility, reproducibility and reuse, and the possibility of exporting their results and workflows as a fully documented research object. It will be a collaborative, cloud-based workbench environment, bringing together users and providers of data and text analytics tools. The platform will be accessible to researchers with a broad range of experience and skills (including beginners) and across a range of disciplines. Support provided by the platform will include hands-on workshops, online training modules and online office hours, as well as advice and collaboration in selected partnerships.

This will be followed by a workshop on Juptyer notebooks on the 24th August from Sara King, so register here.

Amir Aryani (Swinburne) provides an overview of a knowledge mining project that leverages AI technologies to read, digest and classify 470,382 papers related to COVID-19. While this is an example of knowledge mining from health literature, similar technology can be applied to social science, humanity and other research domains. In this project, 470,382 research articles were identified following a search referencing Coronaviruses and SARS research topics between July 2002 and May 2022. The database was classified and natural language processing applied to automatically generate a research-topic-labelled and structured literature database, which was reviewed and revised by health experts. The periodical topic distribution empowers a new line of novel research analysis and provides insights into evolving research trends related to the pandemic.
