Introduction to R (2x half-day workshops)

June 7, 2021 - June 8, 2021

This workshop introduces the basics of working with data using the R language.

R provides many ways to query, explore, and visualize data, make models from data, and perform statistical tests. By using a computer language, R can do a greater range of things than can be done with a spreadsheet or a point and click statistics application. The R commands used to analyse data document all of the steps performed, and also make it easy to make changes and then re-run an analysis. Attendees will gain hands-on experience writing commands in R to perform common tasks, an understanding of the types of data R can manipulate, and how to use the popular “Tidyverse” collection of R packages.

Introduction to R features additional exercises, and offers the opportunity to more fully explore the data visualisation features including the ggplot2 R package. Participants have the opportunity to fully explore the resources and complete challenges in class calling upon the expertise of the instructors.

This workshop provides necessary background for our more advanced workshops in R, which cover topics such as programming, communicating results using interactive web-apps, using linear models, and working with biological data using Bioconductor.

Course Level: Foundational

This workshop is run in two parts, Graduate Research students must attend both sessions to receive credit.

7 June: 10:00am – 2:30pm

8 June: 10:00am – 2:30pm

This course is considered as an equivalent to “Data Fluency: Express R”. Graduate Research students will only receive credit for one of these workshops, not both.
